How to Budget for Rent

The percentage of your income that you spend on rent depends on many factors, and everyone has different priorities. The industry sweet spot is to spend approximately 30% of your monthly income on living expenses. Keep in mind that oftentimes living expenses include more than just rent.

To build your budget, consider your monthly net income, and decide on what percentage of that income you feel comfortable allocating to monthly expenses. Before selecting an apartment home with rent at the top of that budget, have you added in utilities such as cable, internet, water, gas, and electric? Have you also considered if you will need to pay pet rent or would like to rent a garage? In most cases, these expenses will be in addition to your rent. You’ll want to include all applicable expenses in your monthly budget which will help narrow down your apartment search from the very start. Having a clear and defined budget will help you stay organized and focused on apartment homes in your comfort range.

Is having a garage at the top of your wish list? Yes, they are great for keeping your car protected from the elements, or they can be used as extra storage space! If you decide to add a garage rental, plan to budget approximately $100-$125 per month for the garage.
